In fact, this Melayu Baru thing is not
new. It started during the days of British colonial rule. For this purpose the Malay
College Kuala Kangsar, or MCKK as it is fondly known to the old boys, was created. The
MCKK was supposed to develop a new breed of Malays who would one day fill the top
administrative positions in the government. The British knew that one day they would
have to hand over the running of Malaya to the locals. The master plan of the British was
to influence the thinking of the future Malay leaders to be more tolerable and
sympathetic to the British. At least if they had to transfer the administration of this
country to the locals, let it be locals who have been brainwashed into thinking and acting
like the British.
The British have admitted that this was their biggest blunder as the whole plan
backfired badly. No doubt they managed to create cricket/rugby playing brandy/whisky
drinking Malays, but the MCKK also became the seat of Malay nationalism. The was because
the MCKK managed to produce an intellectual lot and we all know that when the masses start
to think they also start to question authority, in this case British authority. Many of
the early independence fighters like the late Sir Dato' Onn bin Jaffar (the
late Hussein Onn's father), the late Dato' Abdul Wahab (Dato' Panglima Bukit Gantang and
one time Menteri Besar Perak), the late Dato' Laksmana Razali, the late Tun Aziz bin Abdul
Majid (one time Governor of Melaka), the late Dato' Haji Kamaruddin bin Haji Idris, the
late Tun Razak (the second Prime Minister of Malaysia), the late Raja Sir Tun Uda (one
time Governor of Penang), Dato' Bahaman, Dato' Andika Indera, and so on, were allold boys
of the MCKK. |
