" I wonder what would have happened to
your country if it did not join Malaysia in 1963. Most probably, it will still be a HM
colony like Hong Kong. May be by this time, Singapore would have been returned by British
to The Malay States Federation where it originally belongs, just like Hong Kong returning
to mainland China in 1997......" I guess she was really shocked with what
she heard from my mouth. I can bet with you that she did not expect it. We did not talk
for 2 days after that (it was weekend anyway, I did not see her....). However, I think now
she is beginning to learn that she was wrong to think of her country as the best in the
region and all other countries are backwards...
Sometimes, I wonder why they keep thinking about this superiority
issue. Last summer, there was a big, controversial issue in Singapore about Malaysia.
Senior Minister Lee Kuan Yew warned his people that one day, Singapore might have
to rejoin Malaysia. It seems that this issue is a major worry, not only to
Singapores leaders, but also to all her citizens. Why are they so worried about it?
This issue does not exist at all in Malaysia...except during last summer because Mr. Lee
Kuan Yews remarks were more like disdains to Malaysia, rather than a warning
to his people....
I guess.... they realise the fact that they depend a lot on us to live. They get
water supply from Malaysia, imagine what will happen if suddenly, we stop supplying water
to them? They buy our electricity, most of Singaporeans go to Johor Bahru to do
shopping..... More significantly, they realise that there are flaws among their
younger generation.... they are aware that someday, these people might be incompetent
compared to the others in the region.... |
